Tell me a bit more about yourself! Who is Justine Lambrechts?

What do you consider home (referring to the fact that you just graduated from the academy in Antwerp and are moving between workspace/living space/…)

What was the story behind your master project? How did you get here step by step?

What are the starting points of your creative work/process?

Is there a person (e.g. an artist, or this could be anyone) who has influenced your practice?

How do you want people to react/feel when they observe your work?

Goh, moeilijk.

Do you have a favorite artist?

If you could give 1 tip to students who are just now starting an art education, what would you give them?

Tell me a bit more about yourself! Who is Justine Lambrechts?

I’m Justine, 23 years old, busy bee and I often take a bit too much on my plate! I just started the autonomous master in visual arts. I did a premaster last year, after having obtained my master in communication sciences in Leuven. I always realized that, eventually, I would do something with art. Then I chose Sint-Lucas, on the one hand because of the shortened program, on the other because the master is divided into contexts, not based on which specific art discipline you exercise. Because of this, you are surrounded by very diverse people, which makes it all the more interesting and inspiring.

What do you consider home (referring to the fact that you just graduated from the academy in Antwerp and are moving between workspace/living space/…)

I see myself more as a nomad at the moment! That has actually been the case since my start at Sint-Lucas last year. I live in Herent, sometimes I go to my boyfriend’s house in Hamme-Mille, and when I’m not there, I’m in Antwerp. My studio is on the campus. Yet, I see my real studio as a travel caravan, actually. I paint wherever I go.

What was the story behind your master project? How did you get here step by step?

So I did the premaster and this was really just a year of experimenting for me. During my previous studies I went to the weekend academy where I learned how to paint. This was mainly observational painting: landscapes, live models and still lifes. That’s good to learn technique, but then you enter the premaster and you are not really trained in conceptual thinking. So that was the first step. A year of self-reflection: who do I want to be as an artist? How can I realize that? I still don’t really know 🙂

What are the starting points of your creative work/process?

My conclusion from the premaster was that my work lacked tactility. In my master year I’m going to investigate this. I don’t know exactly where this will lead me, but at the moment I’m busy sculpting still lives out of clay and painting them on a larger format. This creates a kind of alienation from the painted object, which makes the interaction between the two intriguing to me. I also get inspired by objects that attract my attention, for example transparent kitchen foil. With this I then create my own images.

Is there a person (e.g. an artist, or this could be anyone) who has influenced your practice?

Many interesting people have crossed my path, also in relation to my art practice. I pick up something from everyone. This can be straightforward feedback, but also, for example, the way in which someone lives, or their work mentality. Also myself of course. I reflect a lot on myself and I am quite the overthinker. Tiring and sometimes you crash, but the advantage is that you learn a lot about what you want from yourself. Of course, that has a lot of influence.

How do you want people to react/feel when they observe your work?

Gosh, difficult. Many personalities are going to see your work, so it’s hard to guide those different personalities within one train of thought. I prefer to leave this open. The different reactions are very interesting.

Do you have a favorite artist?

That changes as my interests evolve. Currently I am fascinated by the work of Damien Meade. Bacon is an all-time favorite.

If you could give 1 tip to students who are just now starting an art education, what would you give them?

Have the audacity to be stubborn, but not too stubborn. You are going to be in contact with a lot of people and each of them will have an opinion about your work. Beware of people who project their vision of art onto your work. Rather, be eclectic. Hear people out, be critical, but take the information you find interesting and inspiring.
