Lies Jacobs

An ear, earth, the living moss, “hou-vast” cast in plaster, a well, ashes, salt, outside and inside. I explore procedures of caring and states of aliveness. My pursuit to understand how we connect to nature, the people we love, and the things we hold dear, aims for a sense of empathy in understanding our existence.

By exploring the symbolic meaning of the ear and the transformative power of the moss, I create space where we may spray the moss, touch the “hou-vast”, kneel down and make ourselves small to witness growth.

Lies Jacobs (1964.) Art and care present a unique opportunity.

After completing her degree in Illustration and Design at DKO, Lies decided three years ago to pursue a Master's degree in Visual Arts with a Socio-Political context. Last year, she finished her second Master's degree in Fine Arts, both at Sint Lucas Antwerp. Her artistic practice has thus been broadened both in terms of content and visual expression, and she now uses various techniques such as sculpture and installation to express her artistic vision.

The process of developing her own artistic identity has shaped Lies and encouraged her to support others in developing their creative skills. She has a strong connection to the people in her community and remains actively involved in Albe vzw and the 'den 138' art studio. Thanks to her work, she has had a positive impact on the lives of many and continues to strive to support and inspire individuals with disabilities through art. Lies turns her gaze to things, stories, memories and people that often go unnoticed.

Often the starting point in her artistic process is an object she has picked up, or moments of feeling lost.  Experience taught her at a young age that the continuity of existence is not transmitted from reality but from possibilities. Throughout a grieving process, she experienced the power of imagination. Art allows her to experiment with the infinite variations of possibilities. According to Lies, the energy this releases is comparable to existential life forces.

On September 15, 2022, at dusk, my mother passed away. The molecules in the room behaved strangely. Dying happened as suddenly as new life gasping for breath. In this work, I explore the forces of nature, bringing different elements together. An ear, earth, the living moss, hou-vast cast in plaster, ash, salt. A combination with a common thread: the power to connect us meaningfully with the path we are following. Exploring the symbolic meaning of the ear and the transformative power of the moss, I create a space where you may spray the moss, touch the hou-vasts, kneel down, make yourself small to witness growth.

In which direction do these forces go? Everything unfolds, everything moves on, we don't know where we are going, only this "moving". Nature never goes back; it always moves on.
