Wie is Anne Decot?

Antwerpen, Borgerhout

Anish Kapoor, Heinz Mack, Jef Verheyen, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Ruudt Peters, Jean-Michel Folon

Who is Anne Decot?

I am a visual artist and photographer based in Antwerp, Belgium. I recently received my Master degree in photography from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.

What do you consider home, referring to the fact that you just graduated from the academy in Antwerp and are moving between work space/living space?

For me, a home is not inherently connected to a place. Feeling at home has to do with an inner state that is connected to your identity, among other things. It is a place where I can find peace at all times. From that rest comes most of my inspiration.

How did you end up at the academy in Antwerp? What was your trajectory?

After three years of studying art in high school, I wanted to deepen myself creatively. The photography course appealed to me the most at the Academy because of the artistic freedom.

Where is your studio located?

Antwerp, Borgerhout

What was the story behind your master project? How did you get there step by step?

In Continuum I want to escape the claim of objective representation, which is inherent to the photographic medium. I use the descriptive precision of devices – scanner and camera – to transform perceived reality into something beyond matter. The desire to portray the unattainable is translated as testing the limits of perception, an inherently photographic endeavor. While the drawings and the sculptural object are made from a creative force.

What are the starting points of your creative work/process?

Internalizing. Creating is very much about being in touch with who you are. During the work process I try to be concentrated and attentive and at the same time it is a moment to let go. It is a constant movement between being in control and accepting that things sometimes happen or are the way they are.

Is there one person e.g. artist but could be anyone who has influenced your practice?

Besides my boyfriend who is a painter, Casper Fredeus, the Zero movement has been an influence on my work during the last two years of my education. But music also inspires me greatly, from Graindelavoix to Max Richter to Dead Can Dance.

How do you want people to react/feel when they observe your work?

The viewer of my sculpture series might experience how the dimension of the infinite is found in the ordinary. A slow meditative and immersive contemplation of the image allows one to look beyond the surface and intuitively perceive the metaphorical layer. The images thus become a gateway to unexpected meanings.

Can you describe what you are working on now?

Devoting myself to art practice is very important to me. Besides my part time job at Lies Mertens I try to draw and paint regularly and think about future exhibitions with my series Continuum.

Do you have a favorite artist?

Anish Kapoor, Heinz Mack, Jef Verheyen, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Ruudt Peters, Jean-Michel Folon.

If you could give 1 tip to students who are just starting a fine arts education, what would you give them?

Give yourself the time you need to grow in order to develop your artistic practice in the best possible way.
