Mathilde Melsen

"When observed from a distance, these gardens reveal themselves as a kind of artwork, shaped by forms, colors, and rhythms. For me, the Vlaanderenstraat in my hometown is the perfect example of this."

Mathilde Melsen (Wuustwezel, 2002) is a recent graduate with a master’s degree in visual arts from Sint Lucas Antwerp. In her work, she combines illustration and ceramics into a single poetic visual language.

“For a long time, I have been fascinated by Flemish front gardens, the mysterious sculptures that inhabit them, the shapes carefully trimmed into hedges, the patterns found in bricks and tiles. They are so typical of our region. In my master’s project, I invite you to look at these gardens with an open mind, to discover the beauty in the everyday and to approach them with renewed attention. When observed from a distance, these gardens reveal themselves as a kind of artwork, shaped by forms, colors, and rhythms. For me, the Vlaanderenstraat in my hometown is the perfect example of this.”
